September 14, 2018

Here’s how a TED Talk is born:

“Once a year, a thousand remarkable people gather in Monterey, California, to share something of incalculable value. Their ideas.”

Oh, and each talk then goes on to accrue hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of views online.

TED Talks – which are delivered by groundbreaking entrepreneurs and thinkers from around the world – are renowned for their eloquence, entertainment, and high level of expert insight.

They come in differing forms, covering a myriad of subjects, but the subject of business and entrepreneurship is a popular one. To bring you the cream of the crop, I’ve trawled their archives to bring you nine TED talks that will make you hungry for success.

1. The Mind Behind Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity (Elon Musk)

If all of todays entrepreneurs got together for dinner, it would be hard to imagine Elon Musk sitting anywhere other than the head of the table.

In this TED Talk, Musk discusses how his ideas, energy, space travel, and why he’s such an awesome entrepreneur.

2. Your Elusive Creative Genius (Elizabeth Gilbert)

Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' thinks you’re a genius.

Through this TED Talks, Gilbert voices the inspirational idea that, instead of rare people "being" geniuses, all of us "have" a genius. It's a personal, entertaining, and surprisingly motivational presentation.

3. Do What You Love (Gary Vaynerchuck)

If you don’t already know about Gary Vaynerchuck, you’re missing out. He’s a badass businessman with an excellent YouTube channel for entrepreneurs which vends inspiration and advice for the business world.

Technically, this talk was given at Web 2.0 Expo NY, but it has been adopted by the TED website. Vaynerchuck used his time to deliver hard-hitting advice with his usual guile, passion, and comedy.

4. How to Get Your Ideas to Spread (Seth Godin)

Seth Godin is a marketing whiz, and with this TED Talk, he explains how to get your ideas to spread like wildfire in a world of too many choices, and too little time.

To get his point across, Godin references the success of the idea of sliced bread.

5. The Single Biggest Reason Why Startups Succeed (Bill Gross)

From solar energy devices to software companies, Bill Gross has launched countless startups and incubated many others.

In this TED Talk, Gross reveals five essential elements that lead a startup to success, and compresses it into a relatively short presentation.

6. Want to Innovate? Become a "Now-ist" (Joi Ito)

Joi Ito reacted to the radiation crisis in Japan by launching one of the most successful citizen-backed science projects in the world.

In this TED Talk, he speaks about how innovation isn’t necessarily a planned action – it’s usually spur of the moment.

7. Secrets of Success In 8 Words (Richard St. John)

Got a spare three minutes? That’s all the time it took for Richard St. John to convey the 8 secrets of success.

He spent 7 years conducting 500 interview with successful entrepreneurs to figure out exactly how to foster success.

8. Where Good Ideas Come From (Steven Johnson)

Need to come up with a good idea? Steven Johnson – the serial author and TV personality – knows where they come from.

Steven Johnson’s book, ‘Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation’ expands further into the topic introduced in his TED Talk above.

9. Life at 30,000 Feet (Richard Branson)

Richard Branson is one of the most successful entrepreneurs the world has ever seen.

In this TED production, he lifts the lid on his past, what motivates him, and the obstacles that he still faces today. This one is rather lengthy, but it’s a must watch.
