Just like how other companies are considering the idea of redesigning their website, you may also be faced with the decision whether to have it done in-house or outsourced. Having a website redesign handled in-house can save your company 50% on cost, yet these savings can ultimately cost your business more if not done well.

So how can you decide whether you will outsource your web design or not?

First, take an honest look at the skill sets and people in your business. Do you have the necessary people at the ready to create a successful business website? Can they accomplish this within the desired timeline?

Here are some types of people that you will need to have on your team to create a good and effective website.

Marketing Leader – This person needs to have strong digital expertise so they can guide your digital strategy, ranging from identifying target audiences and their needs to defining the key success metrics from the perspective of web analytics. This person can take company growth and revenue goals and translate them into visitor and lead targets. They can articulate what’s needed from a tactical viewpoint on the website redesign to accomplish these goals.

Expert Web Designer – This individual understands that web design is more than just a work of art. This person or team knows how ideal customers use the Internet and how to design a website that makes it easy for them to find the information they need.

Experienced Web Developer – The role of this person is to produce efficient and clean code, include a content management system for easy website updates and knows how to code a website compatible with different devices. For good SEO, page speed is critical. That is why you’ll also need a person who’s updated on ways to optimize the performance of a website.

Talented Copywriter – This person can write using the tone of your brand, understands your company’s unique selling proposition and organizes data in your website to make navigating easy. The person must be knowledgeable in writing for search engine optimization as well.

Project Manager – This person’s role is to take control over your budget and timeline while effectively handling input from various stakeholders in your business. This person needs to be skilled in communicating, is willing to be an advocate for customers and can skillfully push back decision makers when needed.

After determining the abilities of your current staff, you might find that your internal resources may be suited for parts of the project but not others. If that is the case, you might want to consider outsourcing part of it. You may have an excellent project manager but lack the design team. You may have someone who knows how to design a website, but you don’t have someone with the knowledge on creating a successful website strategy and plan.

If you need a fresh perspective on your business, go ahead and outsource your web design. Working with an outsourcing digital provider can disrupt how you would normally communicate and design. They aren’t trapped in the same mindset as your company has always been. Since they are experts in this field, they can think the same way as your customers that you simply can’t.

Thinking that you can get your website redesigned without additional cost because you have your staff working on it is a fallacy. Pulling your employees off internal projects can prove to be costly, and projects that are managed internally tend to drag on.

However, outsourcing your website design needs means that you get more predictable services because most agencies have a reliable and repeatable process; since they do this kind of job regularly. Often you will get more creativity and insight from an external agency that can see your products and services in a different light.
